things to do in Kauai on a honeymoon

Kauai is one of the most romantic destinations in the world. This off-the-beaten-path Hawaiian island is home to incredible resorts, Airbnbs, beaches, hikes, water sports, and outdoor activities. So I created the ultimate guide of romantic things to do in Kauai on a honeymoon.

The Ultimate Kauai Travel Guide

Know Before You Go: a car is essential on Kauai. Renting a car saves you money because rideshares and hired drivers are expensive. Plus, a rental car gives you flexibility over your itinerary, room to store and transport your belongings, and privacy. I drove all over Kauai on my four-day trip, and I only had to fill up my gas tank once.

Sail along the Nā Pali Coast. If you’re here in the summer, the surf is calmer. So you should do a Zodiac boat tour that will take you into sea caves and under waterfalls along the coast. If you’re here during the rest of the year when the surf is rougher, I recommend a catamaran cruise that includes dinner, drinks, and snorkeling.

See seals and turtles on Poipu Beach.

Visit the Wailua Falls Overlook.

Eat at Keoki’s Paradise.

Visit Kōkeʻe State Park, and make sure you go all the way to the Pu’u o Kila Lookout.

Go tubing in the sugar plantation canals.

Do the scenic drive through Waimea Canyon State Park. My favorite stops are the Waimea Canyon Lookout, the Waipo’o Falls Lookout, and the Pu’u Hinahina Lookout on the Waimea Canyon Trail.

Stay at the Sheraton Kauai Resort or one of these romantic hotels.

Book a private table in one of the front rows at a luau.

Visit the Opaeka‘a Falls Overlook.

Do a helicopter tour (my favorite is a no-doors helicopter ride).

If you want an adventure activity, visit Secret Falls. This trek requires you to paddle 3 miles (round-trip) and hike 2.5 miles (round trip) in the mud through the jungle and over several stream crossings.

Visit the Kilauea Lighthouse.

Enjoy the views at Hanalei Valley Lookout.

Hike a portion of the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail.

Suggested Itinerary

If you can’t stay on Kauai for this long, I’d prioritize days 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Day 1: Arrive on the island, pick up your rental car, and check into your hotel or Airbnb. Then in the evening, see a luau.

Day 2: In the morning, go on a Zodiac or catamaran cruise along the Nā Pali Coast that includes snorkeling. Then lounge by your resort’s pool or on the beach in the afternoon, and end your day by eating at Keoki’s Paradise (you’ll need to make a reservation for this restaurant).

Day 3: Drive the scenic route through Waimea Canyon State Park. You’ll want to stop at the Waimea Canyon Lookout, the Waipo’o Falls Lookout, and hike the Waimea Canyon Trail to the Pu’u Hinahina Lookout. Then keep driving into the mountains to Kōkeʻe State Park, and make sure you go all the way to the Pu’u o Kila Lookout.

Day 4: Hike a portion of the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail in the morning. Enjoy your hotel or vacation home’s pool in the afternoon, and do a helicopter ride in the early evening.

Day 5: Go on a scenic drive around the eastern and northern parts of the island. Stop at the Wailua Falls Overlook, Opaeka‘a Falls Overlook, Kilauea Lighthouse, and Hanalei Valley Lookout in the morning or afternoon. Then in the evening, see the sunset at Poipu Beach and look for seals and sea turtles.

Day 6: If you want to do a high-adventure activity, do a guided paddling and hiking trip to Secret Falls. If you want to do a less-extreme activity, go tubing in the sugar plantation canals.

Day 7: Fly home or to another Hawaiian Island.

  • Is Maui or Kauai better for a honeymoon?

Everywhere in Hawaii is perfect for a honeymoon! You can’t go wrong with any place in Maui or Kauai, and I highly recommend you visit both islands, if possible.

  • What is the best month to go to Kauai?

The peak travel season for Kauai is December-March, when prices and tourist numbers will be at their highest everywhere on the island. So book your accommodation, rental cars, and tours in advance to save some money and ensure availability. These months have the highest rainfall, so choose accommodation on the west or south coast, which are usually drier.

Kauai is one of the wettest places on Earth, so there’s always a chance of rain year-round, especially at the higher altitudes. But rain showers on Kauai are usually brief, and, often, they can cool you off.

July-August is only slightly less crowded and expensive than December-March. The weather is perfect during these months – sunny and dry, with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to mid-80s.

The year-round warm weather means Kauai doesn’t have an off-season. But April-June and September – November are shoulder seasons when you can score some great (by Hawaii standards) accommodation and airfare deals.

The current along the Nā Pali Coast is calmer in the summer than in the Fall, Winter, or Spring. So if you’re here when the surf is calmer, I recommend a Zodiac boat tour that will take you as close as you can get to the Nā Pali Coast, including into some of the most spectacular caves in the world. But if you’re here when the water is too choppy for a Zodiac tour, you can take a catamaran cruise.

  • How many days do you need in Kauai?

Give yourself at least 4-5 days to explore Kauai. This will give you plenty of time to do a couple of scenic drives, enjoy the beaches, go sailing, and hike.

  • What is Kauai known for?

Kauai is known as the “Garden Isle.” And the island is famously only partially accessible by car. Only 20% of Kauai is accessible by car, and most of the coastline can’t be seen from any road, which means this is the perfect island for boat and helicopter tours.

  • Do you need a car in Kauai?

A car is essential on Kauai. Many tour companies provide transportation to and from guided tours, and taxis and rideshares can be arranged by your hotel. But these can be expensive.

So if you’re going to leave your hotel more than a couple of times (which I highly recommend!), then a rental car can save you money. Plus, a rental car gives you flexibility over your itinerary and room to store and transport your belongings.

I spent four days on Kauai with a rental car, and I drove all over the island. But because the island is so small, I only had to fill up my tank once.
