romantic things to do in Maui

Maui is one of the most romantic destinations in the world. This dreamy Hawaiian island is home to incredible hotels, Airbnbs, beaches, hikes, water sports, and outdoor activities. So I created the ultimate guide of romantic things to do in Maui.

The Ultimate Maui Travel Guide

Know Before You Go: a car is essential on Maui. Renting a car saves you money because rideshares and hired drivers are expensive. Plus, a rental car gives you flexibility over your itinerary, room to store and transport your belongings, and privacy. I drove all over Maui on my four-day trip, and I only had to fill up my gas tank once.

Drive The Road To Hāna. The most romantic stops on this route are Wailua Valley State Wayside overlook, swimming at Hanawi Falls, and eating at Hāna Harvest.

Stay at the Hana-Maui Resort. Most people only visit Hāna as a day trip, but this hotel is reason enough to stay on the off-the-beaten-path Hāna side of the island. This hotel has vintage bungalow and cottage-style rooms, two pools, on-site bike rentals, a spa, and one of the best restaurants and sunrise views on the island.

Book a private table in one of the front rows at a luau.

Go on a dinner and cocktail catamaran cruise to snorkel at Molokini Crater and watch the sunset.

See the sunrise at the summit of Haleakalā National Park. This requires a reservation and an early morning (think getting up at 3 am). So plan on taking a nap later in the day.

Hike the Pīpīwai Trail.

Do a helicopter tour (my favorite is a no-doors helicopter ride that includes Northern Maui and the island of Molokai).

Spot sea turtles at Maluaka Beach.

Go horseback riding through the pineapple plantation at Ironwood Ranch.

If you’re here from November – March, go whale-watching.

Stay at the Andaz Maui. This trendy Asian-inspired hotel has some of the most spectacular pools you’ll ever find. The four main pools are tiered beneath each other with waterfalls, and there’s an adults-only pool. Plus, some rooms have swim-out pools, and there are villas with private pools. Andaz Maui is also beachfront, and you’ll love the five on-site restaurants.

Watch the sunset at Makena Cove.

Do a wine tasting at Ulupalakua Ranch and Vineyards.

    Suggested Itinerary

If you can’t stay on Maui for this long, I’d prioritize days 1, 2, 3, 6, and 7.

Day 1: Arrive on the island, pick up your rental car, and check into the Andaz Maui. Then in the evening, see a luau.

Day 2: In the morning, do a helicopter tour. Next, head back to your hotel to relax at the pool or beach for the rest of the morning and early afternoon. Then go on a dinner and cocktail catamaran cruise to snorkel at Molokini Crater and watch the sunset.

Day 3: Sleep in. Then in the afternoon, do a wine tasting at Ulupalakua Ranch and Vineyards End your day by looking for sea turtles at Maluaka Beach on your way to see the sunset at Makena Cove.

Day 4: Get up pre-dawn to see the sunrise at the summit of Haleakalā National Park (this requires a reservation). Then spend the rest of the day back at your hotel pool-hopping, napping, and lounging on the beach.

Day 5: Go whale-watching in the morning (if it’s whale watching season from November – March). In the afternoon, do a horseback ride through the pineapple plantation at Ironwood Ranch. Then spend the evening at a beach-front restaurant or back at your hotel.

Day 6: Check out of your hotel in the morning, and drive The Road To Hāna – make sure you stop at Wailua Valley State Wayside overlook, Hanawi Falls for swimming, and Hāna Harvest for lunch. Then check into the Hana-Maui Resort and enjoy resort life for the rest of the evening.

Day 7: Hike the Pīpīwai Trail (moderate-difficult) in Haleakalā National Park in the morning. Then spend the afternoon relaxing at your hotel’s pool, spa, and grounds.

Day 8: Fly home or to another Hawaiian island.
