Underwater Drones

Underwater Drones

If you’re looking for a way to capture unique footage of marine life and aquatic landscapes, one option worth considering is an underwater drone.

These devices can be operated remotely and dive deeper than most divers, providing a different perspective of the underwater world. With a built-in camera and tether, you can capture stunning and unique footage of the underwater world.

While they may be on the pricier side, underwater drones can offer a unique way to capture photos and videos you wouldn’t be able to get otherwise.

Handheld Stabilizers

Handheld Stabilizers

If you want your diving videos to be smooth and professional-looking, consider investing in a handheld stabilizer. These devices are designed to minimize camera shake and provide a more stable platform for capturing footage underwater.

There are many different handheld stabilizers, ranging from simple and affordable models to more advanced options offering additional features.

One popular option is the Smatree Extendable Monopod, which is specifically designed for GoPro cameras. This accessory can also be extended into a selfie stick, so it’s great for wider angles and getting you in the frame.

Another great option is the TELESIN Dome Port with a Diving Stabilizer Kit. This handheld stabilizer is excellent for close-up pictures and videos, and you can take over/underwater photos.

No matter which handheld stabilizer you choose, it’s essential to look for a model that’s durable, easy to use, and provides smooth and stable footage. Investing in a high-quality stabilizer allows you to take sharper and clearer diving photos and videos.

Dive Lights

One of the biggest challenges of shooting underwater is poor lighting. Often, the light filters through the water, creating a blue or green tint in your photos and videos. This is where dive lights come in. These handy accessories can add much-needed light to your shots, illuminating the actual colors and details of your dive.

But not all dive lights are created equal. You’ll want to look for a sturdy, waterproof, and versatile light. Some models even come with adjustable brightness settings and beam angles, allowing you to customize the lighting to your specific needs.

Another thing to consider is the battery life of a dive light. You’ll want to ensure it can last for the duration of your dive so you don’t miss any photo opportunities. Some models even come with rechargeable battery packs that can be swapped out easily.

I use an ORCATORCH D560 Mini Scuba Dive Light because it can clip to my mask, is a convenient size, and is easy to turn on and off.

Overall, investing in a dive light can make a massive difference in the quality of your underwater photography. And with so many options, you’ll find one that fits your needs and budget.

Filters

Another essential accessory for underwater photography is filters. Filters can help improve the overall color and clarity of your photographs and videos and protect your camera lens from scratches and debris.

Many types of filters are available to use with GoPro cameras, including red, magenta, and polarizing filters. Usually, you buy a pack of filters to have several color-correcting choices for every dive.

Red filters are ideal for use in blue or green water to add warmth and richness to your photos or videos. Magenta filters are best for use in green water to help balance out the color and reduce the green tint. Polarizing filters can help reduce glare and reflections on the water’s surface, allowing for clearer shots.

When choosing a filter, it is crucial to consider the average depth and lighting conditions of your dives. Some filters are specifically designed for use in shallow water, while others can be used at greater depths. It is always a good idea to do some research beforehand to ensure you select the best filters for your diving needs.

External Housing

A dive housing is a protective case to put your GoPro in, giving it an extra layer of protection from accidental bumps and scratches. Housings also increases the depth you can take your GoPro underwater. Most GoPros have a built-in waterproofing depth of 33 feet. So if you want to dive deeper than this, you need an external housing.

When choosing a dive housing, ensure it’s compatible with your GoPro camera model. Some housing options offer additional features like easy-access buttons, touch screens, and lens covers. Consider what features are most important to you and your diving needs.

Anti-Fog Inserts

Condensation can be a real issue when you’re diving with a GoPro. As you ascend, especially after coming out of the water, it’s common for the camera’s housing to fog up, rendering your footage unusable.

To prevent this, you can use anti-fog inserts that absorb the moisture buildup in the housing. This dramatically reduces the chance of misting during your dive, allowing you to capture clear, crisp footage.

These inserts are incredibly easy to use. All you need to do is insert them into your camera’s housing before your dive, and they’ll immediately begin absorbing any moisture buildup.

Anti-fog inserts have a limited lifespan, though, because they eventually become saturated with moisture. So it’s a good idea to bring extras on your dive. I replace my anti-fog inserts between every dive.

Anti-fog inserts are some of the smallest, easiest, and cheapest GoPro dive accessories that make one of the most significant differences in the quality of your footage!

Safety Tether and Carabiner

I am a klutz. And while I’ve never had a dive emergency, I know there’s always a chance I’ll need to immediately have my hands free to help myself or a fellow diver.

So I always use a safety cord and carabiner to secure my GoPro to my BCD. The last thing I want is to accidentally or intentionally drop my GoPro and not be able to get it back.

I have a safety tether kit with four stainless steel, thin cables of varying lengths, and several carabiners. This way, I always have multiple options for how and where I secure my GoPro.
