Most people never experience the joy of eating Romanian cuisine. Romanian dishes aren’t common outside of the country, so when you’re here, make sure you try as many of these foods as possible.
Romanian food emphasizes meat, fresh herbs, and spices, making it the ultimate comfort food. You’ll find that Romanian food is heavily influenced by Hungarian, German, Turkish, and Slavic cuisine, but Romanian dishes have a distinct, hardy flavor.
I hope you’ve worked up an appetite because here are the best foods to try in Romania!
Mici
Also known as mititei, mici is the most popular grilled food in Romania. These sausages are made with a combination of ground meat (could be beef, lamb, pork, or another protein), black pepper, and spices. Mici is my favorite street food to grab at a market or food stand.
Salata de Vinete
Salata de Vinete is roasted eggplant salad. This is one of the most popular appetizers in the country. The eggplant is roasted or grilled, baked, and then mixed with sunflower oil, onions, mayonnaise, and garlic.
Jumari
Jumari is pork, bacon, garlic, pepper, paprika, and other spices fried into delicious, crunchy, bite-sized delights. I’d buy a bag of jumari at markets and eat them while I explored the cities. But you can also order this dish as an appetizer, where it’ll usually be served with onions and bread.
Moldavian Stew
This dish, also called Tochitura Moldoveneasca, combines some of the best Romanian foods – mamaliga (polenta), traditional salty fermented cheese, fried eggs, fried pork, traditional sausages, and pickles.
Papanasi with sour cream and jam
This is a traditional dessert that originated from the northern part of the country. Papanasi are hot, fried cheese doughnuts traditionally served with sweet and sour cream, blueberry jam, and blueberries.
Ciorba de Burta (Tripe Soup)
People usually either love or hate tripe soup, but it’s definitely worth trying when you’re in Romania. This soup is made with beef tripe, beef and pork legs, carrots, bell peppers, hot peppers, celery, parsley, and garlic. When you order this dish, it will usually come with sour cream, hot peppers, and toast.
Lamb Drob
Lamb drob is also known as lamp haggis. This is an Easter dish that looks like a meatloaf with boiled eggs inside. Minced lamb offal, green onions, eggs, and bread dipped in milk are baked together with fresh-cut herbs, and then this dish is served cold.
Sarmale
Sarmales are stuffed cabbage rolls, and they’re considered to be the national dish of Romania. Rice, minced meat (usually pork or a combination of pork and beef), vegetables, and herbs are rolled in cabbage leaves and baked to a creamy consistency
