Food is sacred in France, and the culinary experience is as important as the dishes.
In France, eating is a celebration of both food and community. It’s this reverence for food that elevates every meal you’ll have in the country.
I hope you’re hungry because here are the best foods to try in France!
Ratatouille
Ratatouille
Ratatouille is a stewed vegetable dish that you probably know from the Disney movie of the same name. This dish is one of the most beautiful meals I’ve ever eaten. The portions are almost always large at restaurants, so you’ll either want to share this dish or be prepared to take a to-go box with you.
Profiteroles
Profiteroles
A profiterole, also known as cream puff or chou à la crème, is a filled French pastry ball with whipped cream, custard, pastry cream, or ice cream filling. Most puffs are decorated with chocolate sauce, caramel, or a dusting of powdered sugar.
Coq au Vin
Coq au vin is a stew-like meal made of chicken braised with wine, lardons (bacon), mushrooms, and garlic. Burgundy wine is typically used to flavor the dish, but depending on the region you’re in, a local wine variety could be used.
Croque Monsieur
Ever since this hot sandwich debut in French cafés in the early 1900s, it’s been considered the best grilled-cheese sandwich in the world. A croque monsieur is traditionally made with ham and cheese, but you’ll find many variations of this sandwich during your trip.
Moules Marinieres
Moules Marinieres
This is one of my favorite seafood meals! Tender mussels are steamed in a classic sauce of shallots, garlic, white wine, and butter. One of the best parts of this dish is that it should come with fresh bread to soak up all of the delicious sauce.
Blanquette de Veau
Blanquette de Veau
Blanquette de veau is a veal ragout. The word Blanquette means a dish of white meat in a white sauce. So you could order different meats in this dish, but veal is the traditional and most common meat used.
Macarons
Macarons date back to the Renaissance. The crispy outside of a macaron is a sweet meringue-based confection made with egg white, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond meal, and food coloring. The filling could be buttercream, curd, chocolate, jam, cream cheese, or jelly. I recommend trying as many variations as you can!
Salade Nicoise
Salade niçoise is a cold salad traditionally made of tomatoes, hard-boiled eggs, Niçoise olives, and anchovies or tuna, with an olive oil dressing. This dish originated in Nice, and it’s most common in the southern regions of France.
Boeuf Bourguignon
Boeuf Bourguignon
Bœuf bourguignon, which is also called beef Burgundy or bœuf à la Bourguignonne, is a beef stew braised in red wine and beef stock. This stew typically containing carrots, onions, garlic, and a bouquet garni (herbs), and garnished with pearl onions, mushrooms, and bacon.
Crepe
Crêpes are very thin pancakes that are served with a variety of fillings and toppings. You can have crêpes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert, and crêpes can be sweet or savory. My favorite crepes are filled with chocolate and topped with berry sauce and powdered sugar!
