What to know before booking an African safari?
When planning your African safari, you need to consider:
1. When are you going to travel? The time of year you go on safari will determine where you can go on safari. Every safari destination has a wet season that you want to avoid because wildlife is difficult to find.
2. Where are you going to travel? Do you have a specific destination in mind? The Serengeti? Kruger National Park? Or is there a specific event you want to witness such as The Great Migration?
3. What type of safari do you want? A walking safari where you’re camping in the bush? An all-inclusive luxury safari lodge? A road trip where you visit a new place every couple of nights? A riding safari?
4. What is your budget? I’d budget a minimum of $1000 a night per person for your safari to ensure you stay at an ethical lodge where some of your rate goes towards conservation efforts.
5. What type of safari lodge do you want to stay in? A luxury all-inclusive resort? An eco-lodge? Glaming?
How much cash should I take on an African safari?
You’ll want cash to tip transfer drivers, but once you’re at your safari lodge, most places let you leave tips for the staff, guides, and game drivers on your credit card.
High-end African safaris at luxury all-inclusive lodges can start at $5000 a night per person and go up from there.
Safaris aren’t cheap. Even walking safaris where you camp in the bush aren’t very budget-friendly. This is just the reality of a safari. You have to get to a relatively remote destination, and the cost of your lodging also goes towards conservation efforts in the national parks and game reserves you’ll be visiting.
I would budget around $1000 per night per person for a safari. This will allow you to stay at a nice lodge with great dining and activities while ensuring your safari lodge is putting some of your rate directly back into their conservation efforts.
What can you not do on a safari?
As a general rule of thumb, you should avoid dark blue and black clothing, socks, and shoes on safari. These colors attract tsetse flies. If you’re doing a walking or riding safari where you’re not in a game vehicle, you should avoid white clothes. White will get VERY dirty VERY quickly, and it will make you extremely visible to wildlife.

What is the best month to go on an African safari?
The best time to go on safari in almost every safari destination is the dry season from June – October. This is when wildlife will be most visible and easy to find because they’ll congregate around water holes. These are the winter months, so bring warm clothes and layers.
If you want to see a specific wildlife event – such as The Great Migration – you’ll have a narrow window of time when you can witness this, and it’s always one of the most expensive and crowded safari sights to see.
If you’re going on safari for birding, the month immediately after a destination’s rainy season is usually the best time to visit.
How much should I tip my safari guide?
Restaurants: 10% of the bill (always check to see if this is automatically included in the check).
Hotel & Safari Lodge Staff (Servers, Housekeepers, etc.): $15 per day per guest.
Safari Guides & Trackers: $20 per guest per day for a guide and $10 per guest per day for a tracker. If you have different guides and trackers during your stay at a safari lodge, make sure to note your staff’s names.
Tour Guides & Drivers (not at camps or lodges): $10 per guest for a half-day, $15 for a full day.
Taxis Drivers: $5 per guest per drive.
Airport & Hotel Porters: $5 per bag.

Is Serengeti better than Masai Mara?
The Serengeti and Masai Mara are both incredible safari destinations, and they will give you very different scenery and experiences. The Serengeti has more concentrations of wildlife than the Masai Mara, but the Masai Mara is less spread out than the Serengeti. I highly recommend visiting both of these places!
